Going Green
enrique asked:

I know someone that is afraid of renewing her green card because it expired in 2002. For reasons she wouldn’t say, she is now worried she will get deported when going to renew it.

They won’t deport her if she’s a premanent legal resident, but she’s going to run into trouble if she leaves the country for any reason. Then they won’t let her back in. If she isn’t actually a permanent legal resident, they probably will deport her.

Yep, and good riddance.

She SHOULD be deported for not abiding by the law. She should have renewed it back in 2002.

If MY license was expired since 2002, I would be put in jail if I were caught driving. What’s the difference?

Lots of interesting answers here. But you don’t lose your legal status simply by not renewing the green card. Now if you spent 5 years outside of the US, then you would have lost your status. If there is some other, unstated, reason here, then all bets are off. If you can’t tell us what it is, maybe it’s time to consult an immigration attorney.

Tell her not to worry. Have her call the INS and give them her location and maybe the INS will bring her a new green card.
